Joseph began to carve wood in the early 1970s and he received training from Nisga'a/Tsimshian artist Murphy Stanley and Hank Robinson. He started to work in silver shortly after he established himself as a wood carver and he has been working in both media for more than twenty-five years. He works in a traditional Nisga'a style.
