Masks were originally designed for use in both spiritual and secular ceremonies. The realistic and supernatural figures depicted are thought to imbue the wearer with the figure’s traits, knowledge, and powers. Masks designed for functional use are only danced on special occasions and are stored away for much of each year. There are many types of masks: mourning masks, transformation masks, clown masks, shamanic masks, and masks designed for specific ceremonies. A great number of masks are now created for the art market.
