Argillite is a type of very hard black slate found in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, exclusively carved by the Haida people. Catlinite is a type of argillite, reddish-brownish in colour, often used by First Nations people in production of pipes and other sculptures.

Gary Olver works in his traditional medium of catlinite to create very detailed, intricate pieces. He also creates sculptures that have miniature mechanics hidden inside, which allows the piece to open or move. Gary studied with Salish artist Tom Eneas.
