"To tattoo our identity is to heal. To be visible in our identity is to heal. This tattoo medicine heals our current generations, but also for those before us and those who come after us. It is a message to the world that we are still here and that we are proud of who we are.

The stitching represents the Nisga'a traditional tattooing method: skin-stitching. Red is the colour of our blood and the colour of protection.

We believe that the ancestors work through our hands. I believe our knowledge and history is in our blood memory. This is a self-portrait of me tattooing with the ancestors working through my hands."
