Acho Dene Koe

BORN:
March 6, 1969

BIRTHPLACE:
Fort Liard, NWT

Karen Cumberland was born in the small community of Fort Liard, and she began learning traditional crafts at a young age. Originally guided by her mother, Karen made her first birch bark basket when she was just ten years old. Since that first basket, she has established herself as one of the community's premier basket-makers, and her work can be found throughout Canadian collections. In 2006, she was chosen as an artist to represent the Northwest Territories at the Canada Winter Games. In addition to basket-making, Karen also enjoys beading, quill-work, and hide tanning.
