At a young age, Walter recognized his artistic abilities and quickly adapted traditional Haida designs and crests in his drawing and carving.

Initially working in wood, Walter soon focused his art form in jewellery.

Although Walter apprenticed under various artists of other nations, he cites his immediate inspiration through his own culture; most notably, the art of his great-great grandfather, Charles Edenshaw.
