Terry Starr

CULTURAL GROUP:
Tsimshian

BORN:
March 2, 1951

BIRTHPLACE:
Prince Rupert, BC

Terry Starr belongs to the Eagle clan. He purchased his first set of carving knives in 1982. Although he had no formal training, he did receive guidance from Kwakwaka'wakw artist Richard Hunt and Nuu-chah-nulth artist Tim Paul at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, BC, in 1984. In 1988, Terry worked on one of the longhouses that were sent to the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, QC. These longhouses can still be viewed at the museum. Terry is always working to improve and diversify his skills. In recent years, several of his original designs have been used in the creation of clothing and fine giftware. Terry is influenced by historical pieces, and especially historical Tsimshian pieces. In 2009, Terry graduated from Vancouver's Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program under established Kwakwaka'wakw/Haida artist Dan Wallace.
