CULTURAL GROUP:
Nuxalk

BORN:
February 19, 1998

Ses comes from a line of artists: he started carving under the guidance of his father, Skip Saunders, and his grandfather, who was artist Silyas Saunders. Ses is from Kimsquit and he began carving at a very young age, and by 14, his work was selling in Bella Coola galleries. His grandfather, Silyas, who had received the Native Artist Fellowship award from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, left Ses his extensive collection of carving tools when he passed away in 2015. Ses completed a pole his grandfather had begun, and it was raised in honor of his memory. In 2016, Ses received the YVR Art Foundation Youth Artist Scholarship award. Seven winners were awarded, and Ses was the youngest by four years. His crest is the Eagle.
