Michelle Stoney has a family background in the arts, as her great uncle is acclaimed Gitksan carver Earl Muldon and her grandfather is established Gitksan artist Victor Mowatt. Michelle attended the University of Northern BC between 2004-2005, and then received her Fine Arts Degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2012. In 2009, her skills were recognized when she received a YVR Art Foundation Youth Art Scholarship. In 2013, one of her designs was selected by Vancouver International Airport for the banners along the road leading to the airport. In 2014, Michelle was asked to participate in Lattimer Gallery's Annual Charity Bentwood Box Event, where she completed an ornate Raven and Sun box with abalone inlays. In the summer of this same year, Michelle coordinated Gitksan Cultural Camps in the Hazelton area, organizing art workshops that focused on traditional methods and forms.
