Melanie is from Skidegate, on the island of Haida Gwaii. She is the daughter of well-known Haida artist Ed Russ, and Faye Russ, who both began teaching her to carve at a young age. Melanie continues to work alongside her mother, making argillite sculpture and jewellery. She currently resides with her children in Vancouver, British Columbia.
