John Spence was born in North Vancouver, and is a member of the Squamish Nation, from the Killer Whale clan. He began learning to carve at a young age from Richard Baker and his grandfather Chief Simon Baker (Khot-La-Cha). John currently works full time as an artist, primarily using red and yellow cedar as a medium for his panels, masks, model poles, and other sculptures.
