Bear and Human House Post - Red Cedar Sculpture
Bear and Human House Post - Red Cedar Sculpture
This sculpture is a rendition of house post design that has been present in Musqueam culture for decades, if not centuries. Several artists have completed similar versions, including the 1975 version by Coast Salish artist Simon Charlie up at the University of BC. This composition is often referred to as 'Man Meets Bear' but the Musqueam name for it is c̓səmlenəxʷ. This name refers, simultaneously, to an important Musqueam mythical figure, an inherited title/name still used today, and also the house post composition itself. According to those who have carried the name within Musqueam culture, the “man” in the title refers to the ancestor c̓səmlenəxʷ, who possessed a special power enabling him to hunt bears. This ancestor figure is thus represented coaxing a bear out of its den with rattle and song.
