Shirley is self-taught and from a family of argillite carvers (the Pollard family). Her Haida name is Gandal Gawdagaa - which translates to ‘Roaring River’. While her brothers create sculptural, rounded pieces, Shirley is best known for her two-dimensional flat style. In 2018, Shirley carved award medals for the Totem to Totem Haida Gwaii Marathon. Her brothers are well known argillite carvers Francis Pollard and Glen Pollard.
