Rachel is of Haida and Welsh descent, and she is the daughter of established Haida artist, Sharon Hitchcock. Her mother encouraged her to understand the cultural practices of her people, and their place within Haida art. Rachel chooses to use only those crests and symbols that are a part of her hereditary privilege. Her family crests include Salmon, Beaver, Frog, Sculpin, Raven, Fish Eggs, Killerwhale, and Supernatural Killerwhale. She currently weaves cedar, paints, and engraves silver.
