Herman was carving during the 1960’s and 1970’s, when argillite poles were endemic to the Northwest Coast Native Art Market. He comes from a large family of carvers with a continuing legacy today. He is most known for his totem poles and model poles. Herman worked with Bill Reid while he was carving large poles at the University of British Columbia while he was artist in resident at the university.
