Ed Calder was primarily a self-taught artist. While he worked in wood, he was best known for his argillite carvings characterized by stippling and rounded forms. He mainly created model poles. Several of Ed's model poles are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, BC. His nephew is established Haida jeweller James McGuire.
