"This year I wanted to create something fun, unexpected, and a little larger than life. While tossing around ideas with other artists, the thought of a crab trap came up, and it immediately felt like a challenge I wanted to embrace. I built this piece around the small bentwood box I was given, transforming it into the bait can at the center of the trap. What started as a simple idea quickly became a tribute to the places and memories that shaped me. Growing up, the river was where I felt most at home, fishing with my dad, learning the water, and spending time with my brother. We mainly fished for salmon, but we always set a few crab traps where the river met the ocean. Those waters fed our families and supported our community for generations. This piece honours that connection: to the river, to the harvest, and to the shared work that sustains us."
