Robert Davidson's Abstract 22k Gold Earrings
We are thrilled to have a pair of Abstract 22 karat gold earrings from Haida artist Robert Davidson currently on display at the gallery. These earrings were created in 2004, around the time when Robert began experimenting with total abstraction by using the base elements of formline design as primary subjects rather than as smaller pieces of a more traditional symbol. This period notably produced many beautiful, abstract, and colourful paintings, such as There is Darkness in Light, Fast Bird, and U and Eye, which can be seen as stylistic companions to these earrings.
Robert's Abstract earrings each feature three trigons appearing either to drift up from or drip down to the overall oval shape's bottom. Each of the three trigons is rendered differently; one is finely hatched with diagonal lines, one is completely cut out, and one is deeply gouged along its edges, demonstrating the dimensional and textural versatility of formline's component parts.
