Artist Statement: This is a red cedar sculpture that is representative of a killerwhale’s dorsal fin. To me, the killerwhale is a symbol of family and unity as they are often seen in pods and travel together. Who are we connected to? Do we work together for a common goal? The colors that I used are more derivative of the Southwest First Nations jewellery and artwork. As I worked on this sculptural piece, I found it quite ironic as there are no killerwhales for many miles when you are in the desert and yet I could feel the connection to the people there. I felt in my heart the connectedness of all beings. It is through this connectedness that we can remember how alike we are…that we are not really that different from one another and that your well-being is my well-being, your pain is my pain and your happiness is my happiness. So... who are you connected to? Him, her, me, yourself?
